Veteran journalist and photographer Marilyn Miller has joined the staff of the Webster Parish Journal, according to Publisher Bonnie Culverhouse.
“Adding Marilyn to our staff of writers just expands our depth of coverage,” Culverhouse said. “She’s an award-winning writer, and I can’t tell you how happy it makes us to have her onboard.”
After graduating from Northwestern State University in 1973, Marilyn went to work covering sports for the Minden Press-Herald. She was soon transferred into the city editor’s position and then began climbing the ranks until she became executive editor of the daily newspaper.
Her almost 20 years in the newspaper business included a stint on the wire and lay-out desk for the Daily Town Talk in Alexandria, La.
Marilyn won many Louisiana Press Association (LPA), United Press International (UPI) and Associated Press (AP) awards, including those for feature writing, photography and editorial writing. The Minden Press-Herald earned the LPA’s most coveted award, the Gibbs Adams Award for “Best Investigative Reporting” in 1988 while Marilyn was working as executive editor.
In 1990, the New Orleans native who calls Minden home, was named director of Marketing & Public Relations for Fibrebond Corporation, a worldwide manufacturing company headquartered in Minden. She retired in 2008 after suffering a spinal cord injury in 2006.
In 1997, Marilyn wrote and published a true crime novel, “Sons of Darkness, Sons of Light,” which told the story of a Webster Parish (Grove) family that was murdered on Christmas eve of 1916.
Marilyn will write feature stories, the occasional column and will sometimes provide hard news coverage. She may be reached at 318-465-5667. Please leave a short message about your idea.
