Countdown time has begun … this is the last week before Webster Parish Journal’s Football Pick’em Contest kicks off.

Every week, local high school football games, four college teams and four pro teams will be on a ballot link, which will include tie-breakers based on total points of two selected teams..

It’s easy … follow the link, pick the winners. Each weekly winner over the life of the contest will be on the receiving end of $100 and will have their photo taken at our title sponsor Under Dawgs Sports Grill, the gathering place featuring a home-field atmosphere.

Anyone 18 and older is eligible to participate. All it takes is an email address and a combination of skill and a little luck.

When the regular season starts, the contest will start over every Tuesday and remain open until 4 p.m. each Friday before the listed games. Weekly winners will be notified and announced in the following Wednesday edition of the Journal.

The Louisiana Black Bear Hunting Lottery will open to state hunters beginning Aug. 29 and run through Sept. 25, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced.

The bear hunt, administered by LDWF, will be confined to Bear Management Area 4, which includes Tensas, Madison, East Carroll and West Carroll parishes and portions of Richland, Franklin and Catahoula parishes. The season will begin Dec. 7, 2024 and run through Dec. 22, 2024.

Lottery applications are available only on the LDWF website at https://louisianaoutdoors.com/lottery-applications. Those interested in applying should update or create their customer details similar to purchasing a license and then submit an application. Possession of a valid black bear hunting license is required prior to applying for the WMA and the general Black Bear Lotteries. A $50 non-refundable application fee will be charged to each applicant. All applicants will be notified of their results via email as well as at https://louisianaoutdoors.com/lottery-applications.

A total of 10 permits will be issued for the 2024 lottery. Bear harvest permits will consist of three types: Wildlife Management Area (WMA), Private Landowner, and General. For instructions to apply go to Black Bear Hunting Lottery | Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Successful applicants will be required to attend an LDWF bear hunter training course on either Nov. 2 or Nov. 14 prior to hunting, with the department encouraging attendance on the Nov. 2 date if possible. Individuals not attending one of these courses may be disqualified and forfeit their bear hunting permit.

Will Trump even be protected?

I have never been able to make sense of the details of the assassination attempt of President Donald Trump. 

I focus here on the lack of details and information regarding the shooter himself.   All indications are that Thomas Matthew Crooks was an unknown and unremarkable individual.  How did he manage the things he did relative to the assassination attempt and how is his digital footprint so vague, and, we are told, impenetrable?

The New York Post states that “Trump rally gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks used encrypted messaging accounts on various platforms located in Belgium, New Zealand, and Germany, according to a member of a task force investigating his assassination attempt against President Donald Trump.  U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) stated that the ‘overseas accounts’ piqued his suspicion immediately regarding the shooter’s motives. Why does a 20-year-old kid who is a health care aid need encrypted platforms not even based in the United States but based abroad – where most terrorist organizations know it is harder for our law enforcement to get into?”

Why, indeed.

My first thought was that whoever motivated and supported Crooks was a highly sophisticated yet completely invisible 3rd Party.  I remained perplexed until I read an article recently that points the finger directly at Iran.

Dr. Walid Phares, a Mideast expert, has written an article entitled “Iran Wants Trump Eliminated by Election Day,” which is as sobering and ominous as its title suggests.

In the article, Dr. Phares makes the point that multiple sources have informed him that “the Islamic regime in Iran is trying to assassinate former President Donald Trump … by Nov. 5, Election Day.”  (New York Post, Walid Phares, August 21, 2024).

Dr. Phares continues “the ayatollahs’ mortal animus against Trump is not a secret.  After Trump ordered a Baghdad drone missile strike in January 2020 that successfully killed Qassem Soleimani, head of the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps), Tehran vowed bloody revenge.  Now, with the U.S. election race close, the power figures believe Iran’s growing status as a regional Mideast powerhouse will be at serious risk if the former president returns to the White House. Throughout his campaign, Trump has repeatedly promised that if elected, he will stop the regime’s nuclear weapons program and defund it with crippling sanctions.” (NY Post)

Phares concludes that “Trump blames the Biden administration for the resurgence of Iran’s nuclear program and its misdeeds across the region in the wake of Oct. 7 and has vowed repeatedly to use sanctions and make that regime broke, a result the mullahs cannot accept.  Today, killing Trump remains Tehran’s safest option and its highest priority next to growing the country’s nuclear program.” (NY Post).

This is a real and imminent threat.  

However, after the appeasement of the Biden and Obama Administrations, Iran has no real fear of repercussions for any of its actions.  Iran has used its oil money—made available by the reckless actions of the Obama and Biden Administrations—to fund terrorism around the world, mostly deploying its proxies like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. 

But this is much more direct.  

If true, this is one country attempting to assassinate the leader of another country.  I close with this thought.  America is thought to possess the best intelligence agencies in the world.  However, we have witnessed these agencies become highly politicized at the very top.  President Trump is likely not their preferred candidate, so can we assume they will keep him safe? Do they even want to keep him safe?  

This assassination attempt investigation is being conducted by the Department of Justice (DOJ), Secret Service, and FBI, well known Trump-hating federal agencies (to a lesser extent the Secret Service) that were responsible for the Russia hoax, the Hunter Biden laptop suppression, the Ukraine call impeachment and resulting weaponization of the Department of Justice lawfare hoax, and others.

Yet, we are supposed to trust these agencies with ferreting out the truth when with all the technology in the world they have supposedly not been able to crack the code of the encrypted foreign messaging apps that a 20-year-old loner had on his phone? How were they so ineffectual as to be defeated by a 20-year-old with no military experience and potential emotional problems? 

I don’t believe that they have been unable to crack this code. I believe information is being withheld.

   We are in a perilous time and need both prayers and a strong, forceful American leader.

A 28-year-old Minden man is fighting for his life in a Shreveport hospital after being shot once in the head just after 11 p.m. Sunday at a residence in a local housing complex..

Minden Chief of Police Jared McIver said Keandrious Mingo was shot as he sat in a chair on the front porch of a residence in the 600 block of Marion St. Mingo was treated at the scene, then airlifted to the Shreveport hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

“Our investigators are pursuing multiple leads in this case and we’re still gathering information,” McIver said. “At this point, it’s an attempted homicide but that could change.”

Evidence gathered at the scene of the shooting indicates several shots were fired, McIver said.

Officers from five law enforcement agencies armed with warrants swept down on three separate Minden locations early Thursday, netting seven felony arrests and illegal narcotics.

Minden Chief of Police Jared McIver said a lengthy investigation by his department’s narcotics division led to the coordinated raid on residences in the 500 block of Marshall St., the 600 block of Constable St., plus the 100 block of Timothy Dr. in a Minden trailer park.

Joining forces with the MPD in the raids which hit just before 7 a.m. were officers and agents from the Webster Parish Sheriff’s Office, Bienville Parish Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team, ATF and DEA.

McIver said the coordinated strikes were intended to enforce warrants obtained as a result of the investigation centering on individuals in the original targets at Marshall and Constable streets. One suspect named in warrants was spotted at another location which led officers to the third address.

Quantities of methamphetamine, synthetic marijuana and a variety of drug paraphernalia were recovered as a result of the raid. Individuals arrested and their charges include:

• Darien Moore, 26, 600 block Constable St., possession of methamphetamine, possession of synthetic marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Melanie Elise Lope, 36, 600 block Constable St., possession of methamphetamine, possession of synthetic marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Jeremy Clark, 31, 600 block Constable St., possession of methamphetamine, possession of synthetic marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Teri Nutt, 51, 600 block Constable St., possession of methamphetamine, possession of synthetic marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Shannon Leigh Ward-Redwine, 52, 100 block Timothy Dr., possession of methamphetamine.

• Justin Bailey, 35, 100 block Timothy Dr., charged on four warrants for distribution of CDS Sch. II (methamphetamine). Bailey’s total bond is set at $100,000.

• Demarcus Willis, 47, 500 block W. Marshall St., charged on three warrants for distribution of CDS Sch. II (methamphetamine). His total bond is set at $90,000.

• Chasion Chism, 34, 100 block Timothy Dr., possession of synthetic marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the Chief, detectives of the MPD Criminal Investigation Division are already familiar with the Marshall St. location. Investigators are still looking into the murder of a Minden man, Daniel Merritt, whose body was discovered buried in a wooded area behind the residence.

Nobody really knows the age of the Minden Animal Shelter, but everyone agrees, it’s time for a new one.

At the beginning of September, City of Minden will advertise for bids on the 1,800 square ft. building (under roof), around half of which is offices, space for 10 inside canine kennels – twice the number as the current shelter – and a room for cats.

“The architectural design is already complete on it, and our preliminary estimates are anywhere from $350,000 to $400,000,” said Building Official Brent Cooley. “We’ve already had a pre-bid meeting.”

The entire complex will be around 2,700 square feet and includes porches, a yard area, common space for possible adoption meet and greets and five outside kennels that are for temporary holds, which are animals that may be ill or should be kept separate from the others for a variety of reasons.

Cooley said the new facility will be built next to the old one and when it is complete, the old one will “go away.” There will be a completely new foundation, drainage system and, thanks to the “Pet Mayor” fund raiser last May, there will be an air conditioning/heating system for the animals.

One of the biggest issues for the current shelter is drainage, and with the new facility, that will go away, also.

“When we had that meeting with the contractors, that’s one thing we talked about,” Cooley said. “I told them all that property has been built up around the shelter for 70 years. Everything is draining down to the middle where the shelter is. We’ve got to get the water away from the building. It’s going to take quite a bit of dirt work, but where we’re putting the building is kind of on a high spot.”

Cooley said there is a driveway that goes through the shelter from the gates off Ewell Park Street to the dirt pit and old landfill used by the Public Works Department. Access is now made from McMullen Street, Cooley said.

“There will just be one access from the Ewell Street Park entrance gates, and that back entrance will be cut off,” he said. “Our driveway will not be beat up so bad anymore.”

Jeffrey W. McNeill was unanimously appointed fulltime chief of police for the Village of Dixie Inn during a special meeting of the Board of Aldermen Thursday afternoon, Aug. 22, 2024.

“This will be a full-time position,” said Mayor Donna Hoffoss, “That way he can give the Village 100 percent of himself. And he’s got the training and the education.”

“I want to thank you all,” Chief McNeill, who attended the afternoon meeting with his family, stated. “I just pray that I do you justice.”

Alderman Lance Milligan, who nominated McNeill, said that he was “very impressed with your interview. About the Board’s decision to go with a full-time position, he added that it would “really be a challenge” for a chief to do an adequate job on a part-time basis.

Chief McNeill is Peace Officer’s Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified, SWAT certified, State-certified as an Emergency Medical Responder, and trained in Fire Investigations. He is also a Field Training officer.

Chief McNeill began his career in law enforcement with the Ringgold Police Department, which he served as a patrol officer from January 2010 until November 2012. From November 2012 until October 2022, Chief McNeill worked for the Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Ken Bailey. He was a patrol officer for the parish, and answered all 911 and non-911 calls.

He went to work for the Haynesville Police Department in November of 2022 as a patrol sergeant and head training officer. He trained all new employees, and also answered all 911 and non-911 calls.

He is a graduate of Minden High School and the University of Phoenix. Chief McNeill is married to Brandi McNeill, who is assistant director of Minden’s Physicians Practices. They have two children, Faith and Bryson. The McNeills now reside in Heflin.

“Chief McNeill has good character, 100 percent good character. That’s what sold me on him,” said Alderman Judy McKenzie.

Governor Jeff Landry announced the launch of the GUMBO 2.0 program. This program allows for the distribution of $1.355 billion in funding to support broadband access throughout the state. This initiative will expand broadband access to 140,000 locations—including 100,000 homes (60,000 of which are in rural parishes), 35,000 businesses, and 4,000 community anchor institutions such as schools, hospitals, and law enforcement agencies. GUMBO 2.0 will create 8 to 10 thousand new jobs, GDP is expected to increase by $1.3 billion, and $2 to 3 billion in new revenue will be generated for Louisiana companies.

This funding comes from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and will be administered by the country’s top ranked broadband office (According to a 2024 American Enterprise Institute ranking of broadband offices), the Louisiana Office of Broadband Development and Connectivity.

“Today, we are one step closer to eliminating the digital divide in our state. GUMBO 2.0 will play a direct role in expanding access to health care, growing our state’s small businesses, providing opportunities in the education field, and integrating technology into our agricultural sector. When we win in broadband, our citizens win, our communities win, and our economy wins. I am eager to see this program in action, and I look forward to the economic impacts it will have on our state for generations to come,” said Landry.

“Louisianans need high-speed internet to grow their businesses and educate our children, and today we are investing in that need,” said Dr. Bill Cassidy.”I was proud to be an integral part of securing this money for our state and am thankful to Governor Landry as he puts this $1.35 billion into action.” 

“In an increasingly connected world, access to the internet is no longer a luxury – it is a necessity. Louisiana’s GUMBO program is a commitment to ensure no community is left behind in the digital age. It is building a stronger, more inclusive future for everyone. Today, we are leveling the playing field to guarantee that geography does not determine one’s access to information and essential services,” said Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (LA-02). 

“Governor Landry and I have said the people deserve to live healthy, fulfilling lives. Broadband is a critical component to offering healthcare services especially in our rural communities. This funding will allow the department to expand healthcare access, and improve services already being offered across the entire state. I thank Governor Landry and the Office of Broadband Development and Connectivity for bringing the Louisiana Department of Health to the table, and recognizing how this funding could be used to create a healthier Louisiana,” said Louisiana Surgeon General Doctor Ralph Abraham.

“As a result of today’s announcement and under the leadership of Governor Landry, the infrastructure challenges relating to the digital divide will be eliminated in Louisiana over the next couple of years. The impacts will be immeasurable as every day Louisianans from the four corners of the state and in between will soon have an asset that will significantly impact their daily lives, whether in healthcare, education, in our ability to drive economic development wins and increase the labor force participation rate,” said Veneeth Iyengar, Executive Director of Office of Broadband Development and Connectivity.

Minden and the surrounding area now have another option when it comes to choosing a physical therapist.  

Minden Physical Therapy held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of their new clinic located at 111 Ryan’s Way. Jake Conly and his team are ready to serve the community by providing services including neck, back, and joint pain therapies, dry needling sessions, balance and fall prevention, sports rehab and post-surgery recovery.  

Conly was involved in a car accident years ago that caused him to break his leg and as a result had to undergo physical therapy. It was during this time he discovered his passion for helping others the same way his therapists helped him.  

Conly earned his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston before earning his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University in Baton Rouge. He has been practicing for 3 years. 

One perk is that Minden Physical Therapy does not require a doctor referral allowing patients the freedom to select their preferred physical therapist.
