Heflin police report serious crash during recent council meeting

A serious traffic accident on Main Street was among the reports shared during the Village of Heflin’s regular monthly council meeting held Thursday, March 5.

Heflin Police Chief Paul Migues informed the mayor and council that the crash occurred when a driver traveling north on Main Street ran off the road. According to Migues, the vehicle became airborne and struck a light pole, snapping it in half.

“It affected electricity service all the way to Yellowpine Road,” Migues said.

No official report on the driver’s condition was available at the time of the meeting, but she is believed to be okay.

In other business, officials said the Village remains in good financial standing.

In the absence of water department operator Jessie Williamson, Kim Williamson provided an update to the council, noting that the recent ice storm did not cause any major problems for the system.

“There were no major issues that came from the ice storm and everything is in good working order and running smoothly,” Williamson said.

The council also reviewed an offer from Keep Louisiana Beautiful that would provide the Village with “Fines for Littering” signs. However, accepting the offer would require the Village to post related information on both a website and social media page, neither of which the Village currently has.

Due to those requirements, along with concerns about potentially losing eligibility for future grants if the Village could not meet the program’s obligations, the council decided to decline the offer. Instead, members plan to explore the possibility of requesting similar signs from the Webster Parish Police Jury, as littering is becoming more of a problem. That topic will be discussed further at a future meeting.

Road maintenance was also discussed, with the council considering using funds designated by the Webster Parish Police Jury to repair Memorial Park Drive, which is the stretch of road between the Heflin fire station and Main Street.

Several ideas were discussed, but no final decision was made.

While there are currently no major projects or events going on in the Village, the mayor and council members continue to encourage residents to attend council meetings.

Regular council meetings are typically held on the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.

Residents with questions or concerns they would like addressed are encouraged to contact Village Clerk Sherry Limosnero at 318-377-9799 or by email at villageofheflin@gmail.com.
