What began as a simple day on the water turned into an unforgettable memory for 10-year-old Hadli on March 12, when she reeled in an impressive 10.5-pound fish while fishing at Caney Lake.
Hadli was out on the lake with her brother, Trae, and her stepfather, Jacob Thornton, enjoying what they expected to be a normal fishing trip. Instead, the young angler ended up landing the catch of the day AND a story her family likely won’t forget anytime soon.
When the fish hit the line, Hadli held on and worked to reel it in, eventually landing the 10.5-pound catch with encouragement from her family nearby.
“I thought I was hung up on a stump at first and asked Trae to help me. Jacob turned around and a big fish flopped up out of the water,” she said.”Jacob ran to the back of the boat and helped me reel it in and my brother got the net and scooped the fish up.
For Thornton, the moment was about more than just the size of the fish. It was about sharing time outdoors and making memories… Something many parents know is the real reward of a day spent fishing.
Moments like these bring to mind the well-known country song Just Fishin’ by Trace Adkins, where a father reflects on a quiet fishing trip with his daughter and realizes the outing is about much more than catching fish.
As the song famously says, “She thinks we’re just fishin’.”
For Hadli and her family, March 12 proved that sometimes the best days on the water are the ones where memories are made – and in this case, a pretty big fish was caught along the way.
Fishing trips at Caney Lake have long been a tradition for families across north Louisiana, and Hadli’s big catch is just the latest example of the stories the lake continues to produce.
And while she may have set out thinking it was just another day of fishing, Hadli returned home with a catch that will surely be talked about for years to come.
