A group of about 25-30 volunteers, organized by Jessica Gorman, gathered Sunday afternoon at the Minden Cemetery to place flags on 300 or so graves of Minden’s past veterans for Veterans Day.
Gorman started this project a few years ago as part of an American heritage girls group works event. Over 300 flags were donated by a few local businesses for the day’s placements.
Leslie Williams, quartermaster of the Hunter Rickerson VFW Post 2885, was one of those volunteers. He was so pleased to see this being done and commented on how well it was thought out. Each section was labeled with names to make it easier for volunteers to find locations.
Schelley Francis, Dorcheat Museum director and Minden Cemetery Association board member, told The Journal that “Jessica is one of those rare people that care about our history and gets in gear to preserve it and honor our past. Jessica is one of those people that wants to find the answers and that’s what it takes to tell historical facts correctly. I’m looking forward to working with her on future projects at the Dorcheat Museum as well as our local cemeteries.”
