Slicing the Pie: A new column about safety

Slicing the Pie, a new weekly publication by the WPJ, is a Q&A forum whereby WPJ readers can submit questions to have them answered by Ryan Barnette, a veteran police officer and owner of local, tactical training company, Nine and One Tactical, LLC.

Each week Ryan will review submitted questions and choose two or three, to which he will respond.  His responses will then be posted by WPJ.  Ryan will review and answer questions regarding legal issues surrounding self-defense and use of force, home, church, business, and school security, as well as questions about training, tactics, and tactical gear.  To get you familiar with the author, here’s a little bit about Ryan:

Ryan Barnette is a 14+ year veteran of law enforcement, having worked in law enforcement since May 2008, when he was hired by Minden Police Department.  Ryan spent 8 years as a patrol officer; four of those years as a patrol supervisor.  During his time on patrol, Ryan also worked as a team leader on Minden PD’s Special Response Team (SRT).  Following his time on patrol, Ryan was given an opportunity to work in the criminal investigations division, where he spent another four years working as a detective.  Ryan left Minden Police Department in June of 2020 and began work as a detective / narcotics agent with the Claiborne Parish Sheriff’s Office where he is still employed today.  Ryan has issued and executed countless arrest warrants and search warrants throughout his career and worked alongside officers from numerous local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.  During his time in law enforcement, Ryan has received numerous training opportunities through various law enforcement outlets and has taken it upon himself to seek advanced training in the private sector as well.  Some of Ryan’s training and education include:
