Who doesn’t love to eat? It should be very easy to find something enjoyable to whet your appetite at the Minden St. Jude Auction. As long as you get there early.
Hugh Wood and Alex Collins have been offering their pork chop plates for at least 15 years (Collins thinks it’s closer to 20), and they always sell out.
“Within 30 minutes,” Wood said. “We always sell out that quickly.”
Last year, they upped the number of plates from 300 to 450.
“And we still sold out in 30 minutes,” he said.
“It’s all about the kids,” said the owner of Hugh Wood Specialty Meats & Catering, when asked why he got involved with cooking for the auction. “Anything we can do to raise money for them, that’s what we want to do.”
Wood said he and Collins absorb the cost of the food and help.
“Hugh does most of the work,” Collins said.
“Everything – 100 percent – goes to St. Jude,” Wood added.
They say this year’s menu will be familiar to those who have eaten at the auction, or taken plates home.
“Pork chops are a specialty item that we’ve done in the past, and it was always a huge portion for the price,” he said. “We also do potatoes au gratin, green beans and a roll.”
Wood said the two men “plan to keep doing it as long as we can.”
Wood and Collins are not the only ones who give up their time and money to help the kids from the kitchen. Please support these folks as they support St. Jude.

5 p.m. $12 Fried Fish Plates – (drive thru pick-up OR inside pick-up) provided by Gary Brown and the Alley Cats
Sunday February 12
11 a.m. $15 Hamburger Steak Plates – provided by Jimmy Hall
5 p.m. $8 Hamburgers – provided by Pleasant Valley Methodist Church
