Sixth graders from Claiborne Academy accompanied by their Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Kristy Owens, took a trip to Webster Parish on Monday, May 8. They made several stops throughout the parish including the Minden City Hall.
Minden Mayor Nick Cox said, “The students from Claiborne Academy were very sharp, well behaved and curious. They asked me everything from if I had a dog to how old the brick streets on Main Street are. I would be glad to have them visit again.”
The sixth graders originally scheduled a trip to visit Poverty Point on two separate occasions, but plans fell through both times and with the end of the school year quickly approaching they made last minute arrangements to visit their neighboring parish.
“School was winding down with not many days left so we called around and said we could get the best VIP treatment Webster Parish had to offer for them,” said Webster Parish Criminal Division Supervisor Jennifer Hay. “We always enjoy getting to give an inside look into how our offices operate and how we all work together. They were a very inquisitive and respectful group of students and a joy to host.”
The group also had a short visit at both the Minden Police Department and Webster Parish Sheriff’s Office.
“We might not have gotten to show them all the cool things we had in mind, but they had a full day and got a small preview of what the crazy busy life is really like at the police department and sheriff’s office,” said Hay.
Webster Parish Sheriff Jason Parker had a chance to introduce himself as well as explain his many duties and answer any questions the sixth graders had that pertained to his office.
He said, “It was an honor to visit with them on Monday. They are a great group of kids.”
