Vehicle burglaries are a year-round event in north Webster Parish, but Springhill Chief Will Lynd says they are really bad during December.
Since the first of this month, 17 burglaries have been reported, and some are suspected repeat offenders.
“They’ve hit Springhill, out in the parish, Cullen,” Lynd said. “They are juveniles, walking around checking car doors. They find some unlocked and steal whatever is in there of value – guns, money.”
The chief said he is aware of around 20 guns that have been stolen in his area.
The City of Springhill has a juvenile curfew, Lynd said, yet the break-ins are occurring between 11:30 p.m. and 3 a.m.
“Every year I try to tell people to lock your doors,” said the chief. “At least don’t leave anything of value in there. They just don’t listen, and this is what happens.”
Vehicle theft prevention tips:
- Take your keys. Don’t leave them in or on your vehicle.
- Close all windows and lock all doors when you park.
- Never leave valuables in your vehicle.
- Park in well-lit areas or preferably inside a garage, if possible.
- Call the police to report a theft or break-in.
