Minden Tide and Lady Tiders compete in Doc Edwards Tourney

By Shawn C. White

The only Webster Parish basketball that was played in the last week of 2023 was not even in Webster Parish.   Minden’s boys and girls basketball played in the Doc Edwards Tournament which was hosted at Airline High School, Benton High School, and Cope Middle School over the final week of the year.

The boys squad reached the quarterfinals of the championship side of the bracket winning their first round game and falling in the semis.  The girls team reach the semifinals of the consolation bracket

Minden 52, Haughton 47 (Boys)

The Crimson Tide (9-4) trailed three of the four quarters in the rivalry matchup with the Bucs.  Minden headed into the final quarter down 36-35.  Minden got hot at the right time and rolled past Haughton (9-10) with a 17-11 final quarter fueled by Darnell Morris’ six points and Cameron Parker five with both including a damaging three.

Cameron Parker finished with 18 points for the CrimsonTide. Darnell Morris added 15 points.  Kameron Morris punched in for 6 points.  Maurice Rabb contributed 5.  Carmello Smith and Christian Loftin each had 3 points.  Jekoye Knowles scored two free throws.

The Crimson Tide ran into the defending Division II Nonselect state champion Bossier Bearkats (14-6) in the quarterfinals.  Minden ran into a hot Javon Johnson who scored 16 of Bossier’s 37 points in the first half and finished with 25 points.  Bossier had a 37-21 halftime lead.   Minden couldn’t capitalize on a cold third quarter by the Bearkats only outscoring them 7-6.  Bossier held on to eliminate in the final quarter,

Darnell Morris and Carmello Smith each netted 9 points for Minden.  Kameron Harris and Maurice Rabb each scored 6.  Christian Loftin added 5.  Jekoye Knowles bucketed 4 points.  Cameron Parker scored 2.

The Lady Tiders (7-8) went 1-2 for the weekend in Bossier.   Minden came up short in their first round matchup with the Captain Shreve Lady Gators (7-7).  Heading into the consolation bracket quarterfinals Minden squeaked by Class B Zwolle Lady Hawks (6-16) with a 47-45 win.   The Lady Hawks had dropped their sixth consecutive game.  Minden then ran into the eventual consolation bracket winner Northwood Lady Falcons (13-8).  Interestingly enough, the first matchup for the Northwood Falcons and Arcadia Lady Hornets contained both the tournament champion and consolation bracket winner.
