Council votes to make Deputy Chiefs official

Minden City Council members made it official Monday night when they voted unanimously to remove the word “interim” from in front of two Deputy Chiefs of Police.

Lt. Tokia Harrison and Lt. Christopher A. Cheatham completed and passed the Fire and Police Civil Service Board exams and were confirmed to their positions.

In addition, the council approved hiring Jessica Thompson as a full-time Minden Police Officer. Thompson also passed her civil service tests and meets all job description requirements.

The city council unanimously approved the following items:

• Appointment of Joey P. Frye to Minden Planning Commission, filling the unexpired term of Steve Wilson.

• Adopt resolution establishing monthly fees for the collection and disposal of garbage and refuse. Residential charges are $17.50, apartments – $15 and businesses – $19. This is an increase of 50 cents per month.

• Adopt resolution declaring certain City of Minden property as surplus and fixing the terms of sale.

• Adopt ordinance to abandon the 120-foot by 20-foot alley between lots 24 and 25 of the Williamson-Jones Survey.

• Adopt ordinance to declare Green Street a one-way street between West Union and Pine streets, with striped parking on the north side of the street and placing of garbage bins on the south side.

• Change Green Street speed limit to 10 miles per hour. There is currently no posted speed limit sign.

• Authority for Mayor Nick Cox to enter into a local services agreement between the City of Minden and the Parish of Webster. The agreement allows the city and parish to work together (or individually) to take enforcement action against dangerous dogs and vicious dogs under a state statute.

• Authority to advertise for bids for the 2023-2024 street improvements project. Budgeted items include Fort Street from East Union to Homer Road, Germantown Road from Lennon Street to city limits, Mignon Street from Talton to East Union streets, Talton Street from East to East Union streets and West Street from Shreveport Road to dead end. A late addition to the list is Chandler Street from Lewisville Road to Elm Street.
