From Air Force to Ironman: Doyline High Principal takes on epic challenge

By Josh Beavers

Walter Ritchie, the principal of Doyline High School, is gearing up for an extraordinary challenge this summer. The 16-year education veteran and former Air Force serviceman will be competing in the Ironman Lake Placid, one of the most grueling endurance events in the world.

A Journey of Transformation:

Ritchie’s path to the Ironman is a testament to personal transformation. After retiring from a 20-year career in the Air Force, he found himself overweight and struggling with fitness. “I had gained quite a bit of weight after I retired from the Air Force,” Ritchie recalls. Inspired by a television broadcast of the Ironman World Championship, he made a pact with himself to complete an Ironman before turning 50.

Though he missed that initial deadline, Ritchie’s commitment to fitness never wavered. He progressed from shorter triathlons to half-Ironman distances, all while advancing his career in education. Now, as he prepares for the full Ironman distance, Ritchie reflects on the journey: “I have been on both ends of the fitness spectrum, from someone who was overweight and got out of breath walking up a flight of stairs to being able to complete triathlons. I like this end of the spectrum much better.”

The Ironman Challenge:

The Ironman Lake Placid, scheduled for July, will push Ritchie to his limits. Participants must complete a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a full 26.2-mile marathon run – all within 17 hours. It’s a daunting task, even for seasoned athletes.

Balancing Act: Principal by Day, Athlete by Night

Ritchie’s days start at 4:00 a.m. with a swim before school. After-school hours are filled with runs along Highway 164 in Doyline, where he’s become a familiar sight to locals. To fit in cycling training, he uses a smart trainer at home, allowing him to simulate outdoor rides regardless of time or weather.

“Time management is definitely a challenge,” Ritchie admits. “Most of my days start at 4:00 a.m. so I can drive to the pool and be there when they open and get done in time to be at school.”

Impact on School and Community:

Ritchie’s dedication has not gone unnoticed at Doyline High. Students regularly approach him to discuss his training, and staff members offer constant encouragement. He believes his journey has positively impacted his role as principal, promoting health and demonstrating the power of perseverance.

“I am constantly having students approach me to tell me they saw me running or to ask me how far I run,” Ritchie says. “My staff has also been very encouraging and supportive.”

Words of Wisdom:

To those inspired by his dedication, Ritchie offers simple advice: “Don’t put it off. If you have a goal or something you want to accomplish, start now.” He emphasizes the importance of resilience in the face of setbacks, a lesson applicable both in endurance sports and in life.

As the Ironman Lake Placid approaches, Ritchie is grateful for the support of his wife, Stacy, and the entire Doyline community. His journey from Air Force veteran to high school principal to Ironman competitor serves as an inspiring reminder of the Ironman motto: “Anything is Possible.”
