Lace Bugs

Right now there seems to be an infestation of lace bugs in the area.  Lace bugs are destructive insects that appear as pale green to yellow dots that are on upper leaf surfaces.  The bottom of the leaf have small brown or black tarlike spots.  Azaleas and other shrubs are really susceptible to lace bugs.

One way to solve the problem is to spray with water to dislodge the pests.  Keep plants healthy, fertilize and water regularly.  There is a multitude of chemicals to get rid of lace bugs.  Fertillome makes a chemical called triple action that you can spray using 1 fluid ounce per gallon of water.  Spray not only the outer side of the leaf, but the underside of the leaf.  Triple action is also listed as an organic option.

The easiest way to kill the lace lace bugs is to use Fertilome tree and shrub drench.  This is another one of those systemic products that I write about a lot.  So easy to use, mix 3 oz. per each foot of height of  plant to 1 gallon of water and pour around the base of the shrub.  No spraying, just pouring.  Really easy to use.  You don’t have to wait for a non windy day or messing with a pump up sprayer.  These 2 insecticides are great for other bugs also.  I really like it when you can use an insecticide for several uses.  The systemic is the best and easiest way for treating the plant.  It just sucks the chemical up into the plant.

While you are treating for lace bugs, look for other pest.  The chemicals I have recommended are good for lots of problems.
