Eat, shop, judge – Main to Main

By Paige Gurgainers

Antique shoppers that are out browsing for their latest find during the annual Main to Main event this Saturday, November 2, will also have an opportunity to take a break and enjoy some homemade Jambalaya.

Jambin’ on Main will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Minden Civic Center parking lot. Taste testing and voting for People’s Choice will begin at 11 a.m. Cost is $5.

The event will also feature Zydeco music and premier judges including Louisiana chef and food blogger Phillip Norred.

“My food experience started out from a very young age at home experimenting with different ingredients,” said Norred. “I eventually wanted to show the public what I could do, so I started making recipe videos and getting them posted online and social media. As my views began to grow, I sought a college education in culinary arts.”

Norred now spends his time traveling the state of Louisiana showcasing some of the best food in locally owned restaurants.

“Being invited to the great town of Minden and having the opportunity to experience their first annual jambalaya cook-off as a judge is a huge honor,” he said.

According to Minden Main Street board chairman Shawn Hatcher, they currently have 4 teams signed up with a goal of 12 four-man teams. Registration will be open until the morning of the event. Those interested can sign up at https://www.mindenla.org/mainstreet-page.

“There will be no late fee to enter. They can enter at 7 a.m. on Saturday morning and be prepared to start cooking at 7:30 a.m.,” said Hatcher.

Participants can begin setting up at 5 a.m., followed by a cooks’ meeting at 7 a.m. in Minden Civic Center.

Minden Main Street would also like to thank their prize money sponsor – Venue on Pearl.

First place will be awarded $300, followed by second place with $200 and third with $100.

“People’s Choice will take home some bling and bragging rights for the year of Minden’s best jambalaya,” said Hatcher.
