Kilt up for the Tartan Festival April 12

By Paige Gurgainers

Members of the Scottish Society of the Louisiana Highlands are busily preparing for the 23rd annual Scottish Tartan Festival. The date has been set for Saturday, April 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Miller Quarters Park.

“We invite everyone to kilt up and join us for a day full of Scottish culture, music and games,” said Visit Webster Director of Community Affairs Johnnye Kennon. “Hear the skirl of the bagpipes as you explore your heritage at the clan tents.”

Numerous bands including the Red River Pipes and Drums, Emerald Accent, Glegborn, Madolin State and Grammy Award winning musicians – The Cox Family, will be providing traditional and modern Celtic music.

“Marvel at the quick feet of the Thistle Dancers and Pipers and the agility of the Jackson Irish Dancers as they perform Highland dance and jigs,” said Kennon.

When you finish with that, move on over to cheer on your favorite champion at the Highland Games competition or enter your furry friend in the dog show. Come see which contestant can “down a pound” of haggis in the “Haggis-Eating Contest” while you enjoy Scottish foods, as well as traditional festival foods.

Kennon continued, “Feel free to dance around the Maypole, and shop till you drop with our Celtic vendors. It’s sure to be one giant Ceilidh (that’s Scottish for party)!”

Don’t skimp out on Kennon’s favorite highlighted event of the day… the “Bonniest Knees Competition” and much more!

Tickets can now be purchased on scottishtartanfestival.com. Ages 5 and under are free, ages 6 – 11 are $5 and adult tickets are $15. There will be limited seating, so please feel free to bring lawn chairs or blankets.
