The Village of Doyline paused in solemn remembrance on Wednesday, July 9, to honor Officer William “Billy” Collins. This date marking four years since his tragic death in the line of duty.
For many in this small, tight-knit community, the memory of that devastating day still lingers. “Things like this just don’t happen in Doyline,” one resident shared. But it did.
The town continues to honor the life and service of a man who gave everything for the place he called home.
“Not only did I lose a co-worker, but I lost a great friend that day,” said Robby Hayden. “He loved his job, and he loved helping the community.”
Collins is remembered not just as a law enforcement officer, but as a dedicated friend, protector, and neighbor whose legacy continues to inspire. To those who knew him best, he was a “big ole teddy bear” – someone with a big heart. He cared deeply about his community, had a great sense of humor, and never hesitated to lend a helping hand. He loved his family fiercely and was the kind of person who made others feel safe and supported.
In his memory, the Village plans a memorial walk on October 9, which would have been his birthday.
Additionally, this year’s National Night Out event, typically held in conjunction with “Meet the Panthers” in October, will feature special games for children. Proceeds from those games will be donated to C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors), an organization that supports families and colleagues of fallen officers, in Billy’s honor.
Through these heartfelt efforts, the Village of Doyline sends a clear message to the Collins family: he is gone, but never forgotten.
A Hero’s Light Still Shines
In memory of Officer William “Billy” Collins
A hero’s light, though four years gone,
Still shines in Doyline, breaking dawn.
William “Billy” Collins, brave and true,
A guardian lost, forever new.
He walked the beat, with courage bright,
Protecting peace through day and night.
In this small town, he made his stand,
A shield of strength across the land.
The call of duty, he answered clear,
A sacrifice marked year after year.
Though silence fills the space he left behind,
His spirit lives in every heart entwined.
So let us pause and cast our gaze
On memories forged in those four years’ haze.
For Billy Collins, a name held dear,
A hero’s legacy, forever clear.
