A Texas man is currently in custody after a stolen firearm reportedly was found in the vehicle in which he was a passenger.
Ashton Terell Lyons, 35, a resident of Aubrey, Texas is charged with illegal possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
Lyons was the passenger in a vehicle stopped by a Louisiana State Police trooper for a traffic violation just before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. While interviewing the driver, the trooper reportedly was told the passenger had a firearm in the vehicle.
When, during questioning, the passenger denied having a weapon, the trooper reportedly received written permission from the driver to search the vehicle.
During a search, a Glock 19 handgun reportedly was found inside a suitcase in the trunk of the vehicle. The serial number on the handgun reportedly was difficult to read due to heavy scratching.
A data base search reportedly revealed the handgun was stolen. After his Miranda rights were administered, Lyons reportedly admitted possessing the firearm.
He is being held at Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center. No bond has reportedly been set.
