To the Editor:
I spent over three decades as a registered nurse, much of that time caring for patients with lung disease, heart disease, and cancers tied directly to a lifetime of cigarette smoking. I watched too many of my patients try, again and again, to quit and fail. So when I saw President Trump’s FDA authorize modified risk claims for ZYN nicotine pouches, I felt something I rarely feel in a Washington health debate: relief that common sense finally won.
For years, bureaucrats told smokers one thing: quit or suffer. That message came from a good place, but it ignored what I saw with patients every day; nicotine addiction doesn’t bend to lectures. What smokers actually needed was a real alternative, not another finger-wagging campaign from the same regulatory class that never has to look these patients in the eye.
Under President Trump, the FDA didn’t play politics with people’s lives. It followed the science and made the honest call: switching from cigarettes to these pouches lowers the risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. That’s not spin, and it’s not the timid, cover-your-back regulatory culture we got used to for years. It’s a scientific review that respects adults by giving them the truth.
And here’s what should silence the professional worriers who always claim harm reduction and protecting kids can’t coexist: the FDA’s own youth survey data show youth use of nicotine pouches has stayed low and stable, even as adult smokers gained more access to smoke-free options. Youth tobacco use overall is at historic lows.
After a career watching addiction destroy lives, I want to thank President Trump’s administration for putting science and adult smokers ahead of politics. And I want to thank our leaders here in Louisiana for standing behind policies that give smokers an honest, evidence-based path away from cigarettes. It’s not often government gets something this important right, and it deserves to be recognized.
