Portion of Witches’ Ride proceeds will go to first-graders

By Paige Gurgainers

This year’s Minden Witches Ride will celebrate America’s 250th birthday by bringing together two things the community loves… children and furry friends.

As part of the 2026 mission, every first-grade student in Webster, Bienville and Claiborne parishes will receive a copy of “Henry, the Star-Spangled Spaniel” by Louisiana author and Studyville owner Amanda Martin.

The book follows a lovable spaniel on a journey through American history, making it a fitting choice as the nation marks its semiquincentennial. Organizers hope the project will place an engaging educational resource into the hands of local children while encouraging them to learn more about the country’s history.

The Witches Ride will also help cap off the money raised through the 2026 Pet Election, with proceeds supporting the fundraising goal for Minden’s new animal shelter. The combined effort will help provide a safe new home for animals waiting to find families of their own.

Riders are encouraged to embrace this year’s theme by drawing inspiration from furry friends, America 250 and all things “red, white and BOO.” Covens may incorporate the theme into their costumes, group concepts and parade throws.

From providing books to first graders across three parishes to supporting a new shelter for local animals, every Witches Ride ticket, sponsorship and donation will help make an impact.

As of this week, organizers announced they are close to ticket sale cutoff, so if you have not bought your ticket yet, do it soon by visiting witchesrideminden.com.
