It’s no “joke”…..about 40 mahjong players “shuffled” into the “ParTEA” Room at Red Blooms in downtown Minden on Tuesday, August 25 to celebrate the second anniversary of Minden Tiles & Tea.

According to owner Kathy Cropper, in a short time the mahjong group has grown from 16 to 52 players. The 40 who attended the second anniversary affair (of mostly women, but some men) enjoyed champagne and a spread of finger foods of every kind. And, of course, they played their favorite game.

Mahjong is a four-player tile-based game where the goal is to form four sets and a pair to complete a winning hand. Most people find it very challenging, and addictive.

The Minden Tiles & Tea group meets every other Tuesday in the ParTEA Room. However, because of the number of players, several tables have spread out into the adjoining Red Blooms’ retail shop. This month, the players brought canned goods to benefit the newly-formed Food Pantry at First Methodist Church. 

The players also make donations throughout the year which are given to the Minden St. Jude Auction each January. “It’s a fun game that we play, but it’s also a way of giving to others,” Kathy said.
