All states treating teaching of 9/11 differently: Louisiana
Louisiana’s “Freedom Framework” social studies standards, inked in 2022 after a fraught process, address 9/11 at multiple points. A second grade survey of monuments includes the National Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum; eighth graders are expected to place 9/11 and the war on terror in the context of U.S.-Mideast relations. High school U.S. history students are taught about the leadup to the attacks, details of the day including then-President George W. Bush’s brief speech from Louisiana’s Barksdale Air Force Base, and aftermath ranging from the expansion of intelligence agencies to the sense of unity many Americans felt for a time. Education Superintendent Cade Brumley said officials wanted students to appreciate that “what we have seen as a country is that when our freedom is threatened, we protect and we defend and we coalesce around that.”
Shreveport-Bossier economy showing warning signs, economist says
An economist presenting to the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce at LSUS warned that the Shreveport-Bossier economy is showing signs of concern, including slowing job growth, population decline, and softening retail activity. The presentation called on regional leaders to accelerate diversification efforts and address workforce pipeline gaps before conditions worsen.
Bernice man killed in Ouachita Parish pedestrian crash
Ouachita Parish – On Saturday, September 6, 2026, shortly before 4 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop F began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on Louisiana Highway 34 near Smith Street. The crash claimed the life of 38-year-old Dustin Gray of Bernice.
The initial investigation revealed that a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling south on Louisiana Highway 34, in the left lane. At the same time, Gray, who was wearing dark colored clothing, was standing in the left southbound lane of Louisiana Highway 34. For reasons still under investigation, Gray was struck by the Chevrolet.
Gray suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet was properly restrained and uninjured. Although impairment is not suspected, routine toxicology samples were collected and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Residential fire claims the life of a Terrebonne Parish woman
TERREBONNE PARISH – A 32-year-old Houma woman died following a residential fire Saturday morning.
The Houma Fire Department responded to the fire in the 2200 block of Effie Street in Houma around 5:25 a.m. on September 5, 2026. Firefighters rescued the victim from the home and performed lifesaving measures. Unfortunately, she died from her injuries.
State Fire Marshal investigators determined the fire originated in the kitchen. The home did not have a working smoke alarm. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
