The Columns of Germantown-Minden welcomed a packed dining hall Wednesday morning for an Elder Fraud Prevention Presentation focused on helping older adults recognize scams targeting elderly and vulnerable individuals.

Residents were joined by family members and visitors from the community for the educational event, which featured Tracy Campbell with Meriwether Wealth and Planning along with Webster Parish Sheriff Jason Parker.

Campbell and Parker discussed scams currently trending among elderly and vulnerable populations and provided real-world examples of how scammers may attempt to gain a victim’s trust, obtain personal information or convince someone to send money. The presentation gave attendees an opportunity to learn what warning signs to watch for and how greater awareness can help individuals and families recognize suspicious activity before becoming victims.

The speakers also answered questions from those in attendance and encouraged families to remain informed and have conversations with their loved ones about potential scams.

The strong turnout reflected a growing interest in educational opportunities surrounding issues that directly affect older adults and their families.

“We want The Columns to be more than a place our residents call home,” said Paige Gurgainers, Director of Digital Growth & Strategy for The Columns. “We want to be a resource for families and for our community. Seeing the dining hall packed with residents, family members and visitors who came to learn more about protecting themselves and the people they love was exactly what we hoped for when we planned this event.”

The Elder Fraud Prevention Presentation is part of a broader effort by The Columns of Germantown-Minden to provide educational resources and opportunities that extend beyond the walls of the senior living community.

Following the response to Wednesday’s event, The Columns plans to continue hosting programs covering topics relevant to seniors, caregivers and families.

The Columns of Germantown-Minden expressed its appreciation to Campbell and Parker for sharing their time and knowledge, as well as to everyone who attended.
