At approximately 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Shongaloo firefighters responded to a report of a woods fire in the 200 block of Elmer Moore Road. On the way to the scene, Jeremy Sampson, assistant chief of Shongaloo said he could see the smoke. He requested Webster 911 to page Evergreen Fire department.

A few minutes later he requested Springhill Fire Department, along with Sarepta and Cullen fire departments.

Approximately one hour later, he requested the forest service with a plow.

The fire covered 12 to 14 acres. According to Sampson, the owner was burning empty deer corn bags, and he thought they were extinguished.
