UPDATE: No charges expected in Sunday shooting

By Pat Culverhouse –

No charges are anticipated against a Webster Parish homeowner who shot and killed a south Louisiana man Sunday who was allegedly attempting to break into his home.

Sheriff Jason Parker said investigators have determined 44-year-old Billy McFarland of Marrero was shot multiple times as he attempted to gain entrance into the residence on U.S. Hwy. 80 west of Minden.

Parker said McFarland’s body has been sent to Little Rock, Arkansas for autopsy to determine a possible cause for the actions which led to his death.

Parker said the incident began around 5:23 a.m. with a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance inside a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on U.S. Hwy. 80. The vehicle reportedly crashed when McFarland allegedly jumped the female driver. He fled the scene before a nearby deputy arrived.

McFarland reportedly went to the residence where he vandalized two vehicles, breaking the rear window on one and the windshield of another.  He then began banging on the door of the residence.

When he received no response, McFarland reportedly moved to the rear of the residence where he climbed atop an air conditioning unit and used a pocket knife to cut through a window screen and enter the residence.

“We learned he had the knife in his hand when he came through the window,” Parker said. “The homeowner apparently feared for his life and for the lives of others who were inside the residence. We do not anticipate any charges, but we will continue to investigate and forward the results to the District Attorney for review.”

Parker said Sheriff’s investigators learned McFarland had an extensive criminal history in his home area, including felonies.
