As of early this morning, the Village of Dixie Inn has a new mayor.
Donna Hoffoss, mayor pro tem will serve in that position until a special election is called, a new one is appointed by the governor or the vacancy is placed on the fall ballot.
“We will have to have an election to finish out her term,” Hoffoss said. “She still has two and a half years left on it.”
Kay Hallmark-Stratton was in her second term as mayor but served on the council for 10 years.
“So, I’ve got at least 15 years in, and it’s time to do some things I really want to do,” Stratton said. “I am making sure I leave everything in good shape so going forward, Dixie Inn will be fine.”
Stratton said she recently lost a good friend and has others she rarely sees.
“I just want to travel and play Blue Grass music,” she said. “There are so many things I want to do, and while I love my job, I need to do things before I can’t any more.”
Stratton has already contacted the Secretary of State, she said. Papers were to be delivered by 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Qualifying for the fall election is in July.
Unless something changes, Hoffoss will likely serve as mayor until that time, and someone will have to fill her alderman’s seat.
“I’m pretty sure I’m going to run for it (mayor),” Hoffoss said. “We will have a regular council meeting the second Tuesday of May. We will talk then about what we want to do moving forward.”
Stratton said she will always be available by phone, if the council has questions.
