Libraries celebrate ‘Read Across America Week’

Read Across America Week will be celebrated this year from March 2 – 6, beginning on the birthday of author, Dr. Seuss.

In celebration, the Webster Parish Libraries will be holding their annual coloring contest for students in Pre-K through 6th grade.

Webster Parish Libraries Director Savannah Jones said, “We do this every year. We are working on getting that information out to the schools now.”

Entry forms will be given out to each individual school in the parish and may also be picked up at the Minden Main Branch or Springhill Library Branch.

Contest Rules:

1. Use either crayons or colored pencils.

2. Must be the child’s own work.

3. One entry per child.

4. Deadline for entries is Wednesday, March 13, 2024.

Completed entries may be dropped off at the Minden Main Branch or the Springhill Library Branch, whichever is closest to the participant.

All entries will be displayed throughout the month of March at both libraries.

According to Jones, the winners are selected by local community members by age categories: Pre-K and Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd grade, 3rd & 4th grade, and 5th and 6th grade.

The name of the winners, their school and grade level may be posted to social media and local news sources.

The National Education Association launched Read Across America in 1998 as a year-round program to celebrate reading.
