It’s Only Rock and Roll?

My sister lives in Houston and last Sunday night she was near NRG Stadium as the concert from the 2024 Rolling Stones tour was ending and the faithful rockers were heading back to their cars and trucks. She said it looked more like an AARP convention than a rock concert, with many walkers, canes, and grey heads, still wearing their signature “red tongue” logo t shirts. This is not intended to make fun because she and I are from that same generation. It shows how dedicated people can be to “their music” even with Mick and the boys (three left) in their 80’s now. The word on the street is, they still put on quite a show. Of course, Willie Nelson is still touring, and that herbal scented bus will be going to Texas next week. The “Red Headed Stranger” is now 92. Dolly Parton released a recent album “Deluxe Rockstar” at age 78 and the remaining “Eagles” are gearing up for a new nationwide tour.

Music can be such a big influence in our lives. Like those going to vintage concerts, it can bring us back to younger days when life seemed so full of choices and possibilities. It can transport us back to when we met our spouses and evoke those giddy feelings of love and romance. It can sooth our heartaches or help us make sense of a crazy and harmful world.

Do you know that there is a songbook located right in the middle of your Bible? Sometimes we forget that “Psalms” are, in fact, songs. This is the songbook of the ancient Hebrew people. In fact you can easily find these set to music and sung in the original Hebrew or in our English tongue. Of course, some of these Psalms have been set to famous classical arrangements like “The Heavens Are Telling” by Franz Joesph Hyden based on Psalm 19. So many have set Psalm 23 to music in many styles. In more contemporary music, “The Majesty and Glory of Your Name” is based on Psalm 8.

So, start your day or end your day with a song from the Psalms. Try to imagine a tune. They express the full range of human emotion from joy and celebration, to wonder at the majesty of our Creator, to the honest anxiety of living in a fallen world. There is something waiting for you in those pages!

Central hosts honor society induction ceremony

Tuesday evening, April 30, Central Elementary School held their 2nd Annual National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) Induction Ceremony.

NEHS is a program designed for all elementary schools. It recognizes the accomplishments of the students’ academic achievements and responsibilities at home, school and in the community. So far, Central Elementary is the only elementary school in Webster Parish that has this program in place and that is much to the credit of Faculty Advisor Joni Aulds.

“NEHS is about recognizing students who excel not just academically but as a leader and good citizen,” said Aulds. “I want them to have the full experience of gaining leadership skills and mentoring others. I feel that students who participate in community activities build character, self-esteem and develop their servant heart. We are excited about the opportunities these students will have.”

The Central Elementary School Chapter of NEHS is also made up of faculty council members- Lacey Berry, Shannon Hall and Jenifer Francis.

Four candles were lit representing the four pillars of the NEHS – Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Responsibility. As the students’ names were called, each one lit their own candle from the pillar that they felt best described themselves and stated their reasoning.

Peggy Martin Rose

The Peggy Martin rose is named for a La. gardener whose home and property stood under 20 ft of salt water for 2 weeks during Hurricane Katrina.  When she was able to return home the rose was the only plant that lived and grew back.  The Peggy Martin is a very popular garden rose that keeps getting more popular every year.  It even has a huge Facebook following.  It is a great climber that takes off very fast.  You can easily train her to grow on a trellis or fence.

Peggy Martin blooms twice a year with an abundance of pink flowers.  She is disease resistant and needs to be fertilized at least twice a year.  This rose is an aggressive climber with no thorns.  Mine is 3 years old and almost covers my trellis.  When she starts blooming it gets harder to find one to purchase as Peggy gets more popular every year.  There are a lot of other climbers available in Louisiana, but none is more so than Peggy Martin.

Other great roses to grow in our area are the knock-outs.  They are very easy to maintain and come in an abundance of beautiful colors.  Knock-outs can be used as borders or alone in pots.  You need to prune annually down to about 12 inch tall.  By the end of the growing season t he knock-out will about triple in size.  Remove the old canes that grow down inside the bush.

Roses are really easily to have fungus.  Fertilome makes a product called 2-N-1 Systemic Insecticide and Disease Protection.  This is a fairly new product that works its way up the plant as a systemic.  Fertilome also has a great rose food that has the systemic  product added for insects.  This will keep away many insects, including aphids and lace bugs.

Glenbrook Apaches’ next stop: LHSAA semi finals

Glenbrook Apaches bested Ouachita Christian Eagles 4-2 Wednesday, after taking the lead late in the game and guaranteeing one more meeting in a championship quest. The teams were tied at two in the top of the seventh when Jackson Waller doubled, scoring two runs.

A line drive to Dawson Day at first base, resulted in a double play that ended the game in the bottom of the inning.

Glenbrook was first to get on the board in the fourth when Ryan Reagan singled, scoring one run.

Ouachita took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Tucker Stutts doubled, scoring two runs to give the Eagles the edge 2-1.

Easton Sanders earned the win for Glenbrook. He allowed 10 hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out five and walking two.

Karson Trichel took the loss for Ouachita. The righty went six and one-third innings, surrendering four runs on four hits, striking out 10 and walking four.

Want to help? Sponsorships sought for UCAP/b1 Bank annual golf tournament

By Bonnie Culverhouse

Webster Parish communities are comprised of giving and sharing people. Specifically in Minden, two organizations – UCAP (United Christian Assistance Program) and Minden Foundation – depend on donations to help them help those who are in need.

Every year UCAP and b1 Bank work together to host the biggest fundraiser for the organization – the annual golf tournament at Pine Hills Country Club in Minden.

Want to help?

Tournament Director Andy Pendergrass said there are important cogs in the wheel of the tournament event – scheduled for June 29 and 30 this year –  and right now, the focus is tournament sponsorships.

“Sponsorships are very important to the tournament,” Pendergrass said. “The event is not about the golf tournament, it’s about raising money for UCAP.

“It’s so, so important to the health of UCAP, and this tournament is their primary source of fundraising,” he continued, “along with the dessert auction.”

According to Pendergrass, John Earnhardt, Jay Kumar, John McConnell and Fred Cabaniss are “transitioning” the running of the tournament to others, but are instrumental in contacting past sponsors to continue that tradition.

Again, want to help?

There can never be too many sponsors and there is no deadline for sponsorships.

“Those sponsorships go straight to the bottom line of the fundraiser,” he said. “They absorb most of the cost of the tournament.”

Cost for a Gold Sponsorship is $1,000 and includes two teams (2-man scramble) and a hole sign.

Silver sponsorship includes one team and a hole sign. It is $500.

Hole sponsor is $150 and a sign on one of the holes during the tournament.

For Gold and Silver sponsors, a prominent sign recognizing the sponsorship will be on the golf course and the sponsorship will be recognized at a dinner at Pine Hills Country Club Saturday.

Non-sponsor teams are welcome. Cost is $300 per team.

Checks should be made payable to UCAP and mailed to P. O. Box 314, Minden, LA 71058 or dropped at b1 Bank, 100 MBL Bank Dr., Minden.

Entry forms for the tournament are available now.

“The teams are equally as important as the sponsorships,” Pendergrass said. “Last year we had a full field of teams – 60 – and we want nothing less this year.”

Last year, the tournament raised $35,000 for UCAP.

In addition to handing over the reins of the tournament planning, there is another possible transition in the works.

Pendergrass, who is also heavily involved in Minden Foundation and its tournament, said the two entities are considering consolidation for one big tournament event that will include participants of the UCAP tournament and Minden Charity Classic.

“We’ve talked about the potential of a charity championship,” he said. “It would be for people who played in both tournaments.”

But that’s still in the planning stages and something to anticipate for golfers and members of a giving community.

* The purpose of UCAP is to offer emergency food for those in need. Some of its services include rent and/or utility assistance and clothing for adults and children. It is a non-profit, non-denominational cooperative effort of Christian churches in the Minden area. All workers at UCAP are volunteers. Ninety percent of funds raised go toward helping individuals and families.

Come together today to pray

By Paige Gurgainers

“Lift up the Word – Light up the world” is the theme of this year’s upcoming National Day of Prayer. The theme is based on a scripture from the book of Samuel, “For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness. For by You I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; He is a shield for all those who take refuge in Him.:

This nationwide event is to be observed today (Thursday, May 2).

According to the National Day of Prayer website, this day was first signed into law in 1952 by President Harry S. Truman and later amended by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, permanently designating the date as the first Thursday in May of every year.

Every president since 1952 has signed a proclamation encouraging the nation to come together in prayer no matter your background, political party, or denomination. It is the one-day people are encouraged to set aside their differences and come together in Christ with their neighbors, schools, businesses, cities, parishes, state and nation.

Wednesday was first day of drawing

Winning tickets will be drawn each day during the month of May with the proceeds targeting the SRT for equipment and supplies. Joining Sparks is MPD Lt. Shane Griffith. (Photo by Pat Culverhouse)

A-hunting we will go

The Louisiana spring squirrel hunting season begins May 4 in most parts of Louisiana and lasts until May 26, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) said. Squirrel hunting is the perfect gateway for hunting and a great introduction for youth into the sport.

A basic hunting license is all that is needed to hunt squirrels and those 17 and under are not required to have a youth license to hunt squirrels. Squirrel hunting is relatively inexpensive and there are many LDWF public lands on which hunting opportunity is available. Louisiana has two species of squirrels; gray and fox squirrels.

The bag limit is three per day during the spring with a possession limit of nine.

Spring squirrel season is closed on the Kisatchie National Forest, some national wildlife refuges, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property and some state WMAs.

For a complete list of WMAs and public lands open to squirrel hunting and more information on WMA squirrel hunting, go to https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/assets/Resources/Publications/Regulations/2023-2024-LDWF-Hunting-Regs-LR.pdf.

To purchase a hunting license, go to https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/page/hunting-licenses-permits-tags.

All visitors to LDWF WMAs must have either a WMA Access Permit, Senior Hunting/Fishing License, Louisiana Sportsman’s Paradise License or Lifetime Hunting/Fishing License. Go to https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/page/wmarefugeconservation-area-licenses-and-permits for more information.

Join the party Saturday, May 4

Mike Spillers Furniture intends to celebrate its second anniversary and 56 years of Spillers family tradition with a huge party Saturday, May 4 that includes all his friends, family and shoppers.

“We are still family owned and operated after 56 years,” Mike said. “I’m still doing what our family has done. I’m just still glad to be doing what I’ve done all my life.”

Last year at anniversary time, Spillers put out a spread complete with food and activities for folks to drop by and enjoy while shopping for furniture and/or appliances.

This year will be even bigger and better with a Customer Appreciation Day, he said.

Other than location, few things have changed.

“We still maintain the La-Z-Boy brand,” he said. “Still have GE Appliances, just on a smaller scale.”

Mike said they do a lot of special orders and have kicked off a website for some of those orders. Mikey’s Comfort Connection LLC is the way to do that.

“If you buy something in stock, we have to add freight and assembly,” Mike said. “But if you buy it out of the warehouse off the website, you don’t pay any of that. It’s a good deal for the customer.”

Check their website against any competitor. Mike says you will find their prices are lower.

“Since we’re smaller, we are very competitive,” he added. “I make it my business to make sure we are under any competition in the area.”

Spillers can still accommodate their customers’ needs, locally. It’s their niche. When they deliver, they take the product in the house and haul off the old.

“We try to spoil our customers as best we can,” Mike said.

Find special anniversary deals with 24 months, no interest financing or pay cash and save even more.

The address is 1204 Homer Road, Minden, La. 71055. Call them at 318-377-4832 or visit spillersapplianceandfurniture.com.

Springhill gives shout out to North Webster High School Future Farmers of America

After photo

Shout out: Future welders! Future Ag workers! Future woodworkers! Future craftsmen and women!

North Webster High School students from a myriad of classes led by program director, Emmanuel Keith, beautifully restored 15 wooden benches from the downtown Springhill area for the Keep Louisiana Beautiful campaign- Love the Boot Week.

All benches were carefully disassembled, old wood removed. Iron was meticulously combed over with wire brushes and brand new slats were furnished. A fresh coat of stain and sealer went on and voila – the benches were reborn!

A leader that teaches kids to care in the quality of their work is bar none.

Thankful for the teachers and parents that shape young minds to see that their contributions to society matter.

Thankful for the helpers.
