Clerk recruits poll workers for upcoming elections

By Bonnie Culverhouse

It takes a lot of people and put on an election. Just ask Webster Parish Clerk of Court Holli Vining, who is currently recruiting election poll workers.

“It takes about 160 workers to man the polls on election day, and I like to have at least 30 more available in our commissioner pool to fill in for those who can’t work,” Vining said.

In order to be eligible, persons applying must meet the following criteria:

• Must be a registered voter.

• Must be able to work from approximately 5 a.m. until 9 p.m. on election day.

• Must be able to vote without assistance.

• Must be willing to serve in any precinct in the parish.

• Must not be a law enforcement officer.

Workers are selected by random drawing, but those who are picked will be compensated with $200 and the opportunity to work toward higher paying positions.

Anyone interested in serving as a commissioner can view a training video and instructional pamphlet on my website and take the test electronically.

“Before big elections we have a pre-election meeting to refresh the commissioners on important procedures,” Vining said.

The next election is scheduled for October 11.
