Even with no items officially listed on the agenda, the Sibley Town Council held a productive and wide-ranging meeting on Monday, April 13, addressing several ongoing projects and community concerns.
The Sibley Fire Department reported an increase in calls related to natural gas leaks, which officials say are tied to ongoing work by boring crews installing fiber optic cable for a government-funded internet project. Mayor Robert Smart explained that the work is part of a broader effort to expand internet connectivity.
“This is the government internet, where they said nobody will be left behind,” Smart said.
There is currently no timeline for completion. The project falls under the Gumbo Grant and is not managed by the Town of Sibley.
The mayor also shared several updates on local initiatives. Rehabilitation of the town’s water tank, located behind Country Market, is expected to begin soon. However, improvements to the filtration system must be completed before that work can move forward.
Additionally, Representative McMahan has secured appropriations for towns across the district. Sibley plans to use its share to purchase three emergency generators for primary lift stations within the sewer system, a move aimed at improving infrastructure reliability.
Progress continues on the town’s new playground, which is nearing completion with a target opening date of May 1. The project has received strong support from the community, including donations from local residents and business owners. Entergy will be installing poles for lighting at both the playground and nearby splash pad.
Local contributions have also played a key role in enhancing the project. Clint Heflin, owner of B&H Offroad & Equipment, will be donating a security system for the area, while Ben Pepper of Pepper Fence is contributing his time to install fencing as well as giving an at cost price to the town.
Town officials expressed appreciation for the generosity shown by the community.
“It takes a lot of money to run a small town, so all donations and volunteers are welcomed and appreciated,” officials noted.
Looking ahead, Sibley will take part in Love the Boot Week on April 25. While the town will not host an organized cleanup day this year, residents are encouraged to spruce up their own properties during the week.
“We’ve got a lot going on in Sibley,” said Smart. “I appreciate all of the support and we’re not going to stop. We’re going to stay steady and try to develop and grow our little town here.”
In addition to these updates, council members also discussed various ideas for the town’s future, signaling continued focus on growth and community improvement.
