Fire District 3 board votes to put tax renewal on November ballot

The primary topic of discussion at this month’s Webster Parish Fire District Three board meeting centered on the renewal of its current millage, a critical funding source for the department’s continued operation.

Board members voted to move forward with placing the millage renewal on the ballot in the upcoming November election. Officials emphasized that this measure is not a new tax and does not represent an increase for residents, but rather a continuation of existing funding.

“This is simply a renewal,” said Board Secretary Taylor Simons. “Nobody will be paying more money. This is not an increase. It’s just to keep our village safe.”

To provide residents with more information and answer questions, a public meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at the fire station located at 349 Main Street in Doyline. Community members are encouraged to attend and stay informed about the proposal.

Board members stressed the importance of the renewal, noting that without it, the fire department would be unable to continue operating. They also reminded residents that the presence of a local and active fire department plays a significant role in keeping homeowner’s insurance rates lower.

The cost of maintaining equipment alone underscores the need for steady funding. Officials noted that bunker gear for a single firefighter can cost around $10,000.

In preparation for the election process, the board has agreed to hire an attorney who specializes in millage matters to ensure all requirements are properly handled.

In addition, the department continues to seek additional volunteers. Those interested must be at least 18 years old and reside within the district. Prospective volunteers can email websterparishfd3@gmail.com or visit the station on Mondays at 6:30 p.m.

The department also reminds residents that free smoke detectors are available and that firefighters are willing to check existing detectors to ensure they are functioning properly.

Officials encourage all residents to take advantage of these services and to participate in the upcoming public meeting as the community prepares for the November vote.
