Attempting to flee a traffic stop didn’t work for a Minden man who now faces a litany of charges as a result of his failed effort.

Chief of Police Jared McIver said Standley Jamelle Hawkins, 39, is charged with aggravated flight from an officer, DWI second offense, driving under suspension, possession of CDS Sch. I (marijuana), open container violation, improper lane usage and running a stop sign. 

He is being held at Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center where his bond has not been set.

Officer Kendale Booker reportedly attempted to stop Hawkins shortly before 1:30 a.m. Saturday for a traffic violation, but had to pursue him through several neighborhood streets with lights and siren initiated. 

Hawkins’ vehicle reportedly left its travel lanes on several occasions and at one point, left the roadway in an attempt to avoid a box-in technique from another MPD patrol unit. Hawkins was eventually taken into custody when he finally stopped his vehicle. Officers reportedly detected a strong odor of alcohol on Hawkins’ breath and his person.

Officers reportedly found a clear plastic bag containing approximately 60 grams of suspected marijuana and an open can of beer inside the vehicle during a search. Further investigation revealed Hawkins had recently been charged with DWI and that his driver’s license remained suspended.

This information has been provided by a law enforcement agency as public information. Persons named as suspects in a criminal investigation, or arrested and charged with a crime, have not been convicted of any criminal offense and are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
