Last Friday, North Caddo High School received a disheartening call that Ringgold would not be able to travel to Vivian to play in the Titans homecoming game.
The Redskins had numerous players quit the team and they were not going to have enough players to field a team for the game. The situation left Head Coach Shon Trent scrambling for answers as to where his program would be headed in the coming weeks.
Also left in a position of uncertainty, were the Apaches and their week 8 home game.
Against all odds, Coach Trent made the call to Apache Coach David Feaster on Monday afternoon that they had 16 players at practice and were planning on making the trip to Minden this Friday.
Based on LHSAA by-laws, once a team voluntarily forfeits two or more games in a season, they could be forced to drop varsity participation in that sport for the next two seasons.
“That’s the thing people don’t realize, how important it is to keep football in your school. These small schools need football to keep their kids and to keep the schools open. If you don’t want to lose your schools, get your kids to play football,” said Head Coach David Feaster.
The Redskins have not won a game since week four of the 2019 season when they beat Magnolia School of Excellence by a score of 40-14 in the Mariners inaugural season. So far this season Ringgold has been outscored by their opponents by a score of 239 to 48. The Redskins will lean heavily on two-sport athlete Keesean Johnson, who will line up at a multitude of positions including QB and WR.
Ty Feaster will once again lead a powerful Apache offense (339 y/g) that will feature two outstanding receivers in Turner Mclelland and Cason Clemons, and running backs DJ Carter and Rhett Johnson.
The Apaches will try to put the Redskins away early and allow their younger players to gain meaningful reps. Some young players that could make an impact will be Seth Mangrum, Ayden Rose, Gage White, Dawson Day, and Landon Chanler.
Kick off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Friday at Apache Stadium.
