Threat to shoot witnesses leads to arrest

By Bonnie Culverhouse

A Minden man brandishing a firearm at a local motel was arrested Thursday night by Minden police.

John L. George Jr., 35, of Hall Alley, Minden, is charged with aggravated assault with a firearm.

Chief Steve Cropper said officers Reece Tewell and Lita Hopkins were dispatched to a Shreveport Road location in reference to a disturbance.

“Witnesses told the officers that a guy with no shirt jumped out of a truck, took a couple of steps from the truck, then pulled a gun,” Cropper said. “Witnesses identified the man as George and said he told them he was going to kill them.”

Officers reportedly located a firearm on the center console of the truck in which George was a passenger.

“It was close to where George was sitting,” said the chief.

George was arrested, handcuffed and taken to Minden Police Department without further incidence. He was transported to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center.

Election 2022: Plenty of choices

By Bonnie Culverhouse

One of the largest groups of candidates in recent memory will be seeking public offices in Minden alone after 21 individuals filed for seven seats by deadline Friday.

Final day of qualifying started off slowly but picked up speed as the day – and the week – wore on.

“The first day is chaos,” said Webster Parish Clerk of Court Holli Vining. “It slows as time goes on.”

But as qualifying ended at 4:30 p.m. in Webster Parish there were several surprise candidates making a last minute decision to run.

Nick Cox, No Party, drew late opposition for the Minden mayor’s race. Around mid-afternoon on the last day of filing, Billy “Bill” R. Mills, Republican, qualified and at 4:27p.m., District B Councilwoman Terika Williams-Walker, Democrat filed her bid for the seat.

Those running for council for City of Minden include District A – Republican Darrell Morris, Independent Carlton “Buddy” Myles and Democrat Wayne Edwards who was appointed to fill an unexpired term.

District B – Damien Kemp, No Party; Democrat Levon “Charlie” Thomas and Republican Joey Frye are running.

District C candidates – all Democrats – are Javelin Hardy, Maretta Gage, Latasha Anderson Mitchell and incumbent Vincen Bradford.

District D – Republican Habacu Morales, Democrat Lakeyla Jacob Williams and Independent Michael Roy, who also was appointed to fill an unexpired term, are the candidates.

District E – Thomas Adams Jr., Republican; Michael Fluhr, Independent; and Andy Pendergrass, No Party, are vying for the seat that is being vacated by Pam Bloxom who did not seek re-election.

Chief of Police for Minden will be chosen between Jared McIver and Larry Morris Jr., both have No Party affiliations. Independent Will Lynd will keep his badge as chief in Springhill, as he was unopposed. So will Independent Robert Hayden Jr. in Doyline and Republican Paul B. Migues in Heflin.

Cotton Valley has two candidates for police chief: Independent Donald Dillard Jr. and Democrat Sante Douglas Jr.

Dixie Inn will have a choice for mayor and alderman.

Kay Hallmark-Stratton, No Party, who resigned from the mayor’s office a couple of months ago, is seeking to regain the office against Republican Donna Hoffoss, an alderwoman who was appointed mayor when Stratton resigned.

Hoffoss had to resign from her alder seat and Nell Finlay, who was appointed to that position is running for it now. Finlay, a Republican has opposition from another Republican, Anthony Crittendon.

Springhill will choose among three candidates for mayor: Democrat Courtney Allen, Independent Ronnie Hearnsberger and incumbent Ray Huddleston, No Party. Doyline’s Gary T. Carter has opposition from Crystal “Christie” Gates. Both are No Party affiliates.

Republican Ralph James filed unopposed to be Heflin’s mayor.

With 3 to be elected, 3 filed for Doyline alderman: Steven Bridwell, No Party; Jakie Daniels, Republican; and Rachel Muniz, No Party.

Three of 3 Republicans also signed up for alderman in Heflin: Hallie Demoss, Matthew Austin and Robert Stachowicz.

There will be alderman races in all five Springhill districts.

Springhill alderman filers are District 1 – D. Nicole Frazier, Democrat and Danyell Gipson, Independent; District 2 – Johnny Craig, No Party and Dennis Smith, Democrat; District 3 – Independent Patsy Leonard, Stacey Willard, No Party and Debra Rester, Other; District 4 – Alex Edwards and Mike Whitlock, both Republicans; and District 5 – Brandy White, No Party and Republican Derek Melancon.

In the race for Webster Parish School Board, Republican Margaret Edens, District 1, Springhill is unopposed.

In District 2 incumbent Malachi Ridgel did not file, but Debbie W. Thomas and Terrell Mendenhall, both Democrats from Springhill tossed their hats into the school board ring.

District 3 incumbent Independent Charles Strong of Sarepta was unopposed. Shongaloo’s Jeri “JJ” O’Neal, No Party, drew opposition from Republican Jonathan Guthrie.

District 5’s Ronald Rhymes, Republican, of Cotton Valley was unopposed.

Fred Evans of Minden is looking for four more years for District 6, but he is being challenged by Jana Watson. Both are Republicans.

Incumbent Democrat Linda Kinsey, District 7, was unopposed for the seat she has held for many years.

In District 8, Democrat Phillip Michael Smart of Minden, is challenging Glenda Sherrill Broughton, Other, who was appointed to fill her late husband’s seat.

No one filed for District 9’s seat, which is currently occupied by Frankie Mitchell.

Longtime board members Johnnye Kennon, a Democrat from District 10 and Independent Jerry Lott, District 11 were unopposed, as was Republican Susan Addington in District 12.

No one qualified for Justice of the Peace District 3.

The primary election takes place November 8. Polls are open from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Almost kick-off time

Webster Parish Journal is in need of someone to cover Minden High School and Glenbrook School football this fall. No experience needed.

Last year, WPJ published a special Saturday edition of all the parish high school football teams’ Friday night games.

Our goal is to bring the same great coverage this year. Lakeside High School and North Webster High School are covered, but there is still a need for the other two teams. They deserve good, accurate coverage, too.

Please join our team for football season! WPJ pays per story. Email wpjnewsla@gmail.com if you would like to be a part of the fastest growing online publication in the parish.

Attention, political candidates!

Congratulations for qualifying to run for office. We at the Webster Parish Journal want to help you get your message across to local voters.

We will announce your candidacy in a free story. Just send it, along with a photo to wpjnewsla@gmail.com. We would also love to have your advertising and will be happy to email our very reasonable rates to you.

Imperial Cleaners corrective plan of action to be determined

By Paige Nash

During a site investigation conducted May 18 at the defunct Imperial Cleaners and Laundry, a rusted 55-gallon drum was discovered at the east corner of the warehouse portion of the building.

A work plan was prepared by Leaaf Environmental for the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) following this site investigation. It states that this drum contained rainwater and an oily yellow liquid. There also appeared to be dark soil staining the ground in the area surrounding the ground.

According to this plan, Leaaf personnel will be collecting a sample from the drum and the stained soil to determine whether the spill has impacted the surrounding soil and future removal. Once it is approved, the drum will be pumped out into another drum. The old drum will then be triple rinsed. The new drum, rinse water and old drum will then be transported for proper disposal.

The stained soil will be shoveled into a 55-gallon drum, to be sampled for hazardous contaminants.

This is only one portion of their complete project strategy, which also includes, determining contaminant of concern concentrations by collecting indoor/ambient air and groundwater samples.

Leaaf has been conducting site sampling in a tiered approach, with a total of three tiers, based on proximity to the Imperial Cleaners building and presence of sensitive populations. The indoor air sampling that took place on July 19 wrapped up the Tier 2 locations, which were Minden Press-Herald, Minden’s Finest Storage, Webster Parish Head Start Office and Allen L. Holland – CPA Office.

“The lab conducting the analysis of constituents is in New Jersey. The lab results will then be validated by a third-party company. The Louisiana Department of Health will also review the results and provide guidance,” said Celeste Bonnecaze, team leader of the Remediation Division with LDEQ. “The complete review can take 4 to 8 weeks. Once all reviews are completed, the confirmed information will be provided.”

Tier 3 locations include Speer Roofing & Construction, Surgery and Endo Associates, ER Automotive and a residence located on Pennsylvania Avenue.

After all samples are completed and test results are reviewed by all involved parties, they will together determine a corrective action plan to eliminate the problem, implement corrective action, then continue to monitor the situation to confirm and verify the corrective action has eliminated the problem. LDEQ does not have a projected cost of clean-up at this time, and they will not until they receive the final test results verifying the extent of the situation.

Qualifying to run: expect the unexpected

By Bonnie Culverhouse

As Day One of qualifying drew to a close, quite a number of candidates – some expected, some unexpected – threw their hats into the Webster Parish political ring.

And some incumbents seem to be waiting and watching before joining the crowd. Perhaps the largest group of incumbents already filing are running for Webster Parish School Board.

Margaret Edens, District 1, Springhill is running for re-election. At the end of the first day of qualifying, she had no opposition.

District 2 member Malachi Ridge had not filed, but Debbie W. Thomas, also of Springhill tossed her hat into the school board ring.

District 3 incumbent Charles Strong of Sarepta filed, as did Shongaloo’s Jeri “JJ” O’Neal and District 5’s Ronald Rhymes of Cotton Valley.

Fred Evans of Minden is looking for four more years for District 6. None of the above has a challenger yet.

In District 8, Phillip Michael Smart of Minden, is challenging Glenda Sherrill Broughton who was appointed to fill her late husband’s seat.

Longtime board members Johnnye Kennon, District 10, Jerry Lott District 11 are so far unopposed, as is Susan Addington in District 12.

By 5:30 p.m., no one had filed for District 7. The incumbent is Linda Kinsey.

Two candidates have filed for Springhill mayor. They include Ronnie Hearnsberger and Ray Huddleston. Huddleston is the incumbent in that race.

No one has yet filed for mayor of Dixie Inn, Doyline or Heflin. Nick Cox has filed for mayor of Minden. So far, he is unopposed, following the death of Mayor Terry Gardner.

Several districts are seeking police chiefs, including Minden. Current Chief Steve Cropper says he is not running for re-election. Jared McIver and Larry Morris Jr. have filed for that office.

In Springhill, incumbent and long-time chief Will Lynd has filed for re-election unopposed. Cotton Valley has two candidates thus far: Donald Dillard Jr. and Sante Douglas Jr. No one has filed for chiefs of Doyline or Heflin.

Springhill alderman filers are District 1 – D. Nicole Frazier; District 2 – no one; District 3 – Stacey Willard; District 4 – no one; District 5 – Brandy White.

No one has yet filed to be an alderman of Dixie Inn, Doyline or Heflin.

Councilpersons for City of Minden include District A – Darrell Morris and Carlton “Buddy Myles; District B – Damien Kemp; District C – Javelin Hardy; District D – Habacu Morales and Michael Roy (currently seated after being appointed to fill the seat vacated by Keith Beard); and, District E – Thomas Adams Jr. and Andy Pendergrass.

Incumbents Wayne Edwards (District A), Terika Williams-Walker (District B) and Vincen Bradford (District C) have not yet filed. District E councilwoman Pam Bloxom will not be seeking re-election.

For a wrap-up of qualifying, watch for a special Saturday edition of the Webster Parish Journal at websterparishjournal.com.

Council deadline passes with no appointment; mayoral issue goes to governor

By Bonnie Culverhouse

Monday, July 18 has come and gone without a special meeting of the Minden City Council to appoint an interim mayor to fill out the term of the late Terry Gardner.

Tuesday, July 19, the issue was passed to the governor to make the appointment, and Baton Rouge seems conspicuously quiet on the subject.

Interim mayor Wayne Edwards, District A councilman, is running the city at this point.

“Right now, I’m more concerned about the city budget,” Edwards said in an earlier interview. “We’re 1.5 million over on expenses, and we are working trying to get that number down. That’s my major interest right now.

“If we get that taken care of, we will give the other part some consideration,” he continued. “But my focus right now is just on that budget.”

Governor John Bel Edwards had 10 days to make an appointment, although only 8 of those days are now left. One source said he may not make the appointment until after qualifying closes Friday.

The next election is an Open Congressional Primary and will be held Nov. 8, 2022. Polls are open from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. Early voting is Oct. 25 through Nov. 1 (excluding Sunday).

CC Ready Program redirecting lives of troubled youth

By Paige Nash

What do you do when there is a shortage of places for the court system to place a juvenile delinquent? If a child under the age of 17 committed a crime and was sent in front of a judge in Webster Parish, there is currently nowhere for them to go to await adjudication.

When a juvenile is arrested by the Webster Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Webster Parish Police Jury is responsible for payment of that bed. When a municipality such as the City of Minden or City of Springhill arrests an underage person, they are responsible for that payment.

Webster Parish only has a couple of beds available at Ware Youth Center located in Coushatta currently, the only juvenile detention facility to accommodate children in the vicinity of the parish. Those beds are currently occupied and the price of them is about to skyrocket. The detention center recently lost its insurance after three inmates escaped with the assistance of a security guard in May.

A parish or municipality pays under $200 for a bed and will be looking at three times that amount soon.

City Judge Sherb Sentell, who deals primarily with Juvenile crime, noticed a critical need. He contacted Ron Anderson, public speaker and director of multiple programs targeting the youth in Webster Parish.

The judge recognized the need to redirect the lives of troubled youth who have gotten off track and landed themselves inside a courtroom facing a judge – usually him.

Sentell told Anderson the things he wanted to accomplish and in 2016, Anderson began the CC Ready Program (City, Court, Resiliency, Elevation, Ambition and Direction for Youth.) It targets these individuals who have lost their life’s focus due to lack of concrete goals, healthy self-concepts and positive role models.

Kaden Griffith was arrested in 2019 as a juvenile. He remembers his exact feelings about the situation he found himself in, as well as his reaction to it all.

“After everything went down that night, I was taken into custody. I had no emotions at all. I never felt sorry, never felt guilty. I don’t know, I just felt empty. It wasn’t until I saw the look on my grandmother’s face, that changed it all,” Griffith said.

Luckily, he had the opportunity to turn his life around and graduated from the CC Ready Program in 2021.

“In a way, Mr.Ron’s class really was an eye opener,” Griffith said. “It showed me that someone else has also come from a rough childhood like myself, but instead of blaming the world and everyone in it, he showed me how to overcome those struggles and truly turn nothing into something. It was a hard pill for me to swallow, but it was inspiring. Truly it was and it led me on a path to become the best version of myself.”

This Optimal Potential “Life Skills” class is made up of four sessions with each session ranging from 2 – 2.5 hours. These classes focus on redirecting the lives of first- and second-time offenders by having them engage in topics such as goal setting, group dynamics, workplace readiness, job search skills and conflict resolution. All court ordered participants must attend the four sessions to complete the program.

“We have had young people from 10 years old through 17 years old in the program. Since the program began in 2016, we have had 162 youth report to the class and 136 successfully complete it,” said Anderson.

With an 84 percent graduation rate, he has provided many youths with the ability to accept personal responsibility, have appreciation of consequences, discover their strengths and potential and, by doing so, increased the number of contributing adults within the local community.

And so it begins

Filing for public office in our parish began Wednesday and there were already some interesting names on the list in the city of Minden with deadline still two days away. And, we’re told, the list of challengers to incumbents could continue to grow, as will the list for the only open seat (that of Pam Bloxom in District E).

But first, let’s take a look at an issue that isn’t about filing for city council or mayor. It’s about what didn’t get done about the current vacancy at the top of city government. We heard new mayor pro tem Wayne Edwards said his focus was on the city budget, not on getting his council together to name an interim. He was true to his word. That decision might prove costly.

Now that the city’s deadline to name an interim has passed, the pickem job will belong to Gov. John Bel Edwards. We’d bet the only people he knows up here are those who write checks. Big checks. He most likely will name someone whose hand he has never shaken. But, he will know something about them from those he knows.

At first, we had heard former mayor Tommy Davis was a consideration. Since that time, however, we’re told another name or two has been floated. Consider: Edwards is a term limited Democrat. That means he can pick whomever he pleases and not worry about political fallout from this part of his state. Are the other mentions Democrats? Wait until after filing deadline ends Friday.

Now, about those council and mayor filings as of Wednesday afternoon. In Wayne Edwards’ District A, the incumbent had not filed, but is expected to do so. But he’s already drawn two challengers. Darrell Morris and Buddy Myles have lined up to run, and we hear there’s another potential challenger planning to add his name to the list. The pro tem apparently isn’t scaring off competition.

Apparently Terika Williams-Walker in District B isn’t immune to challenge either. Adding his name to the list challenging incumbents is Damien Kemp, and he might not be the only potential candidate. Ms. Williams-Walker could be waiting until the last minute to see what’s happening up the ballot before deciding which chair she’ll seek. At least that’s the word on several streets in town. To B or not to B.

And then there’s Vincen Bradford, incumbent in District C. Seems “Cheese” is being targeted by Javelin Lashundria Hardy and we hear she’s serious about this campaign. We also hear there may be another one or two individuals lined up to file later. Mr. Bradford had not filed on opening day, and there’s no way to reach him either by phone or email. That’s something that hasn’t changed.

Over in District D, Michael Roy is being challenged by Habacu Morales, owner of a popular eatery in town. Talking with a friend, that was a bit of surprise. But, the friend attributed that challenge to the perception that the current council simply couldn’t get along. Among the incumbents, though, Mr. Roy was considered plain-spoken, not hostile. This could be a race that gauges how local voters view incumbents.

District E will be the only race that doesn’t feature an incumbent. Pam Bloxom opted out of seeking another term, and the list of potentials to replace her is growing already. Filing for the open seat to date are Andy Pendergrass and Thomas Adams Jr. Both are good men and will run good races. But we’re also told another name could be entering the race later in filing. That name will be familiar we’re told.

Who will be Minden’s next mayor could be the big question. By Wednesday afternoon, only Nick Cox had filed for the office. He’s been an announced candidate for months and was preparing to run against the late Terry Gardner. We hear through a reliable source that there are one, perhaps two other names that might give it a try.

One of those names will be instantly recognized if the decision is made to pull the trigger for the top spot. But, our source says, that decision will come at the last minute of filing, perhaps around the close of filing on Friday. We’re told the decision could B depending on whether or not another challenger jumps in. It’s a deal that could B made in about the time it takes a cookie to bake.

More later.

Open door- open heart

By Paige Nash

A couple weeks ago when we had that little thunderstorm that brought in some much cooler and very appreciated weather for a few days, we lost our electricity for a bit. It was starting to get dark, so since it felt pretty good outside, I told Emerson to open the front door to let a little light in and maybe get a breeze going through the house. She looked at me like I was absolutely crazy, and said, “But if someone comes over, they will know we are here.”

You might say that we duck and hide a lot. If someone came and knocked on our front door that we weren’t expecting, we would just pretend we weren’t home. I know this sounds bad, but I have been a stay-at-home mom for almost three years now, which means we may not get fully clothed until after lunch some days, a little one may be napping, or maybe I’m just socially awkward at times and don’t feel like having company over.

Well, I used to be this way, that was until one day I heard a knock on the door and like usual I didn’t answer it to later find out that it was my neighbor kindly surprising us with supper for the night. I felt so bad.

So, you see by not answering a knock on the door that evening, I had blocked a blessing. We do that sometimes, block our own blessings in a multitude of ways. By not forgiving, being uncontented, prideful, pessimistic, or ungrateful. We may not notice our blessings sometimes because we are too focused on our problems.

I believe one of the biggest ways for us to block our own blessings is by not blessing others.

Luke 6:38 says, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

I fully believe what we put out into the universe comes back to us. If we give freely, generously and without expecting praise or validation. You know the whole, “do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,” thing mentioned in Matthew 6:3

Personally, I’ve blocked myself from receiving multiple blessings I am sure because at times I have been more concerned with someone else’s blessings. You can’t expect to be blessed when you’re too busy counting the blessings of someone else.

Lastly, you must have an open heart (and an open door) in order to fully unlock those blessings. I’ve been guilty of both, not always having an open heart or open door and by closing myself off, I have missed out on blessings and what I am sure would have been a delicious meatloaf and I love a good meatloaf!

City clerk announces candidacy for council

Michael Fluhr, the current acting City Clerk is announcing his candidacy for Minden City Council, District E. The seat is currently held by Councilmember Pam Bloxom.

“My wife Lenora Bryan and I relocated from Germany to Minden 20 years ago,” Fluhr said. “Since then, I have served this community in different capacities under different administrations – in Recreation, as Superintendent for the Water Plant and 10 years as City Clerk /Tax Officio.

“Unfortunately, lately, Minden has seen its fair share of unnecessary turbulences in our local government,” he conotinued. “I’m running for a seat on the City Council, to transform city politics and concentrate on the issues that matter most to our residents.”

Over the last several years, there has been an ever-growing concern for the City’s financial sustainability while still providing high standards of services.

“We continue to struggle with an unfavorable electricity contract, lack of funding and staffing within every department, deteriorating infrastructure, missing business development and absent activity opportunities for residents of all ages,” said Fluhr.

His platform for voters to consider:

  1. Effective Local Government
  2. Fiscal Management
  3. Stimulating Business Development
  4. Infrastructure Renewal
  5. Recreation

“In my opinion, the most important obligation as a council member is honesty to the residents and holding people responsible while providing checks and balances of our government,” he said. “My belief and business practice as City Clerk has always been to do what is right for the City of Minden and its residents, regardless if popular or not.  Given the opportunity to serve the residents of Minden, every vote – following my principle – will be based on the merits of the issue. I humbly ask for your endorsement and your vote on Nov. 08, 2022.”

For questions, concerns, yard signs or more information, please feel free to contact Fluhr at m.fluhr@yahoo.com or TeL. 318-268-6090”.

Pets, fire department benefit from Bingo

By Tina Montgomery

Do you love dogs? Do you love Bingo? In that case, a local animal rescue has an entertaining fundraising event this Saturday that combines both.

LaMa Animal Rescue will have their annual Bingo Fundraiser on Saturday, July 23. LaMa is a local non-profit, no-kill animal shelter: one of the few rescues to serve Webster Parish. The volunteer rescue group is based in Springhill.

According to Michelle Benson Lewis, the President and Co-founder for the rescue, “LaMa Animal Rescue Annual Bingo Fundraiser helps us to continue our mission of advocating for the many homeless, abused, and neglected animals in Webster Parish and surrounding areas.”

Some of the community programs include a free vaccination clinic sponsored by Petco Love and a strong focus on spaying/neutering education. The rescue also helps to transport adoptable pets to no-kill partner shelters in northeastern states.

The Bingo Fundraiser will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the CAC Building in Springhill. It’s $20 to play and there will be lots of entertainment and prizes, including a $250 jackpot. Organizers also say to “pack your purse” because you never know when a random object could make you a winner.

A new element this year gives you a free blackout card for bringing a case of bottled water for the Springhill Fire Department. While you are limited to one blackout card per player, feel free to bring as many cases of water as you can.

“Come out and learn more about our organization. Lots of chances to win. We look forward to seeing you Saturday night in Springhill,” Lewis added.

Victim’s son saves mother’s life

By Bonnie Culverhouse

A young boy who called 911 may have saved his mother’s life.

Eric Shane Scott, 43, of the 1300 block of Blue Run Rd., Minden, has been arrested by Webster Parish Sheriff’s deputies for domestic abuse battery with strangulation and domestic abuse battery with child endangerment.

Webster Parish Sheriff Jason Parker said late Sunday afternoon, Sgt. Scott Herrington was dispatched to the Blue Run Road address on a domestic call.

“When he arrived, he met the victim who stated she and Eric Scott got into a fight, and he put her on the ground with his hands around her neck,” Parker said. “She told the deputy she could not breathe, and she had bloody fingerprints on her neck and a scratch on her forehead. There was also dried blood on the left side of her head.”

Parker said the victim’s 12-year-old son was present during the incident, and she reportedly gave permission for the deputy to question him.

“He said he was hiding in the bathroom, and when he peeked out, he saw Scott on top of his mother, who was on the floor,” said the sheriff. “He called 911.”

The sheriff said Herrington arrested Scott on the above charges and advised the victim to obtain a restraining order.
